Here’s How to Dress for a Tropical Downpour

Welcome to tropical monsoon season. It’s a September evening in Manila, and you’re about to head out for a drink with friends when the skies open up. The bar is about a kilometer away, so you decide to walk, trusty umbrella in hand. By the time you arrive, the sleeves of your cotton button-up are drenched. Or maybe the rain starts when you’re halfway through your daily run, despite the forecast promising otherwise. In the Fall 2026 menswear shows, several designers clearly had the weather in mind. Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons sent models down the runway in brightly colored technical-fabric capelets, including one paired with a matching turquoise rain bucket hat. The look evoked classic fishing gear with a hint of liturgical dress. 

At Tom Ford, Haider Ackermann layered plastic coats with croc accents over suits. Meanwhile, Saint Laurent debuted black PVC trench coats, with Connor Storrie wearing one alongside over-the-knee vinyl boots during the June show. Make no mistake, these looks go hard, but you’re probably looking for something that works beyond the runway and makes sense for our part of the world.

The Philippines sits at the northeastern edge of Southeast Asia, a chain of 7,107 islands west of the Pacific Ocean. This unique position shapes our climate. At the highest level, waterproof fabric is designed to be completely impermeable to water. With that in mind, your choice of outerwear should always be guided by your specific activity and the weather you’re likely to face.
