Everything That Went Down at the GQ Philippines Launch Dinner

A look inside GQ Philippines’ first proper night out, from the guest list and standout looks to the night’s biggest highlights.

A new magazine is easy to print, but building a world around it is another beast entirely. On the night GQ Philippines officially made its debut, that world came to life around a black carpet, black tie, and a guest list packed with the men and women redefining the parameters of contemporary excellence. Everyone was dressed to the absolute nines, as the gravitas of the occasion demanded. For once, nobody in Manila could complain that there was nowhere to wear the tuxedo gathering dust at the back of the closet.

Inside, four photo vignettes offered a glimpse of the world GQ Philippines was stepping into. The space had all the makings of a very well-appointed Batcave, with cars, watches, suits, and other objects of male fascination placed around the room with suspiciously good lighting. It was sleek, cinematic, and appropriately indulgent—a reminder that men, for all their talk of practicality, still appreciate a beautiful object or twelve.

Matteo Guidicelli took the stage as host, opening the evening by acknowledging the legends and talents who helped bring the inaugural issue to life. Among them were photographer Mark Nicdao, who shot GQ’s Erwan Heussaff cover, and bowling icon Paeng Nepomuceno, one of the legendary athletes featured in the issue.

Publisher and CEO of AGC Power Holdings Archie Carrasco followed with a speech on why GQ belongs in the Philippines, and why stories belong on the international stage. He put it best: “We aren’t bringing GQ to the Philippines. We are bringing the Philippines to GQ, and through GQ, the world.” Amy Mangino, representing Condé Nast, then addressed the room in support of the launch before dinner was served.

The meal itself brought another celebrated man into the room, with Chef Josh Boutwood, in collaboration with Marriott’s Chef Meik Brammer, creating the evening’s menu.

Then came the secret everyone had been trying to keep for months.

Bea Valdes, Chief Content Officer for Vogue Philippines, Allure Philippines, and now GQ Philippines, introduced the magazine’s newly appointed Editor-in-Chief, Danyl Geneciran. In his first major address to the room, Geneciran spoke about what GQ represents—and why the title’s Philippine edition is about considerably more than putting another magazine on a newsstand.

GQ is authority, but it is also access,” he says, describing a publication that welcomes “all kinds of individuality and all kinds of curiosities.” He also spoke of a masculinity increasingly defined not by performance, but by substance: “integrity, creativity, discipline, emotional intelligence, and ambition.”

And then came the covers. Jordan Clarkson. Erwan Heussaff. Darren Criss.

Three global Filipinos. Three distinct disciplines. Three fiercely unique ways of carrying Filipino identity onto the international stage. Clarkson, unable to fly in for the evening, sent a video message from the States, expressing his gratitude for being anchored as one of the brand’s foundational icons.

Heussaff and Criss, meanwhile, took to the stage themselves. Criss, a lifelong GQ subscriber, admitted that his first reaction to hearing about the title was, “Wait, there’s not already a GQ Philippines?” For someone familiar with the magazine long before becoming part of it, appearing in the first issue was, as he put it, “a tremendous honor on top of an honor.” He also spoke about how deeply proud he is of his heritage and grateful for the community that has embraced him.

Erwan picked up the conversation by reflecting on the importance of platforms that can tell stories on their own terms. He echoed Carrasco’s now-memorable line about bringing the Philippines to GQ, calling the distinction “very important.”

Then the magazine wall opened, and behind it was a DJ set, surrounded by the three inaugural covers, with more than enough copies and special edition cases waiting for guests to take home. From there, the evening loosened its tie. Conversations stretched late into the night, drinks were raised, music took over, and the people who had spent months building GQ Philippines finally had a chance to celebrate what they had made.

The first issue was officially out in the world. The party, naturally, was only getting started.
