Brad Pitt Goes Full-On Wildernesscore in Heart of the Beast (Yes, We Made That Term Up)

In David Ayer’s upcoming film Heart of the Beast (out in Philippine cinemas this September 23), Brad Pitt plays a former soldier stranded in the unforgiving Alaskan wilderness after a plane crash. His only companions are his survival instincts and his trusted dog, Odin. If the trailer is any indication, we’re basically getting Cast Away, except instead of a FedEx executive, we get a badass, highly trained soldier, and instead of Wilson the volleyball, we’ve got a cute German Shepherd. 

If you’ve seen Ayer’s previous films (including the very loud World War II movie Fury, which Pitt starred in a little over a decade ago), you know you’re in for an adrenaline-fueled, machismo-driven adventure where men are men and the thrills are never in short supply. Yet when the trailer dropped, it wasn’t Ayer’s signature kinetic action or the canine co-star that caught my attention. It was the movie star’s super-cool wardrobe. 

Brilliantly costumed by Amanda Neale, Pitt’s functional, rugged outdoor gear (which his character just so happens to have on the plane with him) makes his fight for survival look more like a fashion campaign for a hip camping brand than a desperate struggle to stay alive. That’s Hollywood, baby! 

It’s got everything you’d hope to wear in a “wildernesscore” situation (yes, we made the term up), whether you’re heading to Japan’s Fuji Rock Festival or hiking up Mount Pinatubo: camo-printed outerwear, multi-pocket cargo pants and utility vests, beanies and trucker hats, thick wool jackets, printed tees, and, of course, chunky combat boots. And if the clothes weren’t enough, preview images even reveal Pitt sporting a rare vintage Rolex Submariner, as spotted by Watches of Espionage. It got me thinking: Could Heart of the Beast be the next big menswear film?

So far, 2026 hasn’t given us that many great menswear moments at the movies. Last year, though, it was an embarrassment of riches. Remember Wagner Moura in his baby blue chest-baring polo shirt in The Secret Agent? Iconic. Or Josh O’Connor making a chunky knitted sweater and nothing but his undergarments look like fall’s hottest outfit in The Mastermind? Or how about Leonardo DiCaprio looking hipster-cool in a plaid bathrobe, black beanie, and sunglasses as he ran from the bad guys in the Best Picture-winning One Battle After Another? Michael B. Jordan bringing the white tank top back in Sinners, anyone? The list goes on and on. 

The drought has been real. Ryan Gosling’s epic sweaters and vintage T-shirts in Project Hail Mary were a welcome bright spot back in March, but the months since have been surprisingly barren for movie menswear. Brad Pitt’s wildernesscore (again, this will catch on…just wait and see) looks in Heart of the Beast might finally be the rain we’ve been waiting for. Hopefully, Ayer hasn’t revealed all the best ones in the two-minute preview, leaving us with something to look forward to.

Of course, any would-be menswear trend is only as good as the movie star wearing it. If wildernesscore (patent pending) is going to take off, it’s going to take someone like Brad Pitt to sell it. After all, he’s always been at the forefront of cinematic menswear and style. He’s Brad Pitt—one of the biggest movie stars of all time. He can wear anything and somehow make it look cool. He’s proven that time and time again throughout his career. 

Pitt made red leather and loud printed shirts look stylish in Fight Club. He made a popped polo collar peeking over a suit blazer look hip in the Ocean’s franchise in a way Tony Manero never quite managed in Saturday Night Fever. He even brought Hawaiian shirts back for a hot minute after rocking that bright yellow number in his Oscar-winning turn as Cliff Booth in Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood. And let’s not forget his glorious golden crown of hair, which I would argue has been one of his most influential style signatures. 

I guess that’s what makes the menswear in Heart of the Beast so exciting. It feels like the next chapter in Brad Pitt’s long history as a menswear icon. Because if there’s anyone who can convince grown men to start shopping like they’re about to disappear into the Alaskan wilderness, it’s him. Whether we’d actually survive out there is another story. Dressing like we could? That’s a trend I can get behind.
