Love in the Time of Long Distance: How LDR Couples Make It Work

Inside the complicated yet beautiful world of Filipino long-distance relationships.

Humans are tactile creatures. Babies denied touch fail to thrive. Adults, one could argue, are no different. If you’re currently in a long-distance relationship (LDR) reading this and your entire strategy rests on “absence makes the heart grow fonder,” congratulations, you’ve been sold a Disney fantasy!

But as a responsible writer, I refuse to peddle fairy tales. So, I put on my best face, went hunting for couples who have actually survived the tyranny of time zones, and asked them how they do it. Their answers were not what I expected.

The Goodnight Call Is Sacred

Apparently, successful LDR couples have one thing in common: a ritual so unglamorous and mundane that it becomes a form of bonding in itself. Honestly, it’s one of the most beautiful things these couples have shared with me. It’s something that doesn’t have to make any sense to anyone but them.

For Migs and Trina, who’ve been separated by work for three years now, it’s the call and the good morning messages that strengthen their relationship. Every day, without exception.

“Some nights we don’t say anything; most nights we just rant and complain about the stress of our work,” he admits. “Modesty can feel dirty if you do it right. I don’t need to see her undressed. I just do it by staring at her eyes. I like staring at her. I find it very intimate that we just watch each other exist.”

It’s not a bad definition of intimacy, honestly. Plenty of couples, who see each other every day can’t manage it.

Date Night, Now Through Phones

For Paolo and Ellaine—a Cebu–Toronto pairing bridging a brutal twelve-hour gap—daily check-ins are standard, but dates are institutionalized. These aren’t casual “let’s catch up this weekend” vibes. These are calendar-invite dates, complete with a strict dress code.

Because his Friday night is her Friday morning, she sips a pour-over coffee while he cracks open a celebratory weekend lager. Together, they have watched all ten seasons of Friends in lockstep. They have cooked the same chicken adobo in entirely separate kitchens, rating their respective results with the terrifying gravity of Michelin inspectors.

“The rule is you dress up,” Ellaine says. “Even if it’s just from the waist up.”

Which, let’s be honest, is also how most of us attend work meetings, and no one has called that a romance. There’s a quiet genius to it. Ordinary couples drift into routine. LDR couples have to build theirs, plank by plank, so they know exactly what it’s made of.

Phone Sex Is a Lot More Common Than You Think

Skin hunger is real, and these couples are not meditating through it. Virtual sex, usually through Skype video calls, along with the occasional dirty voice notes or sexting session that wouldn’t survive today’s cancel culture, is the improvised economy of the long-distance bedroom.

It is not a replacement for the real thing, and nobody I spoke to pretended otherwise. It’s a stand-in, but navigating that desire is one of the biggest tests LDR couples face. That carnal urge for physical intimacy can prompt people to cheat with someone physically near them.

But the couples I spoke with had one thing to say: Love over lust. It’s a decision you have to make, and you need to choose your person every day.

For these LDR couples, the art of a successful smutty phone call lies in being able to talk openly about your feelings. Say what you want, out loud, to a person who can hear you breathing. “You can’t rely on chemistry when you’re on a screen,” one of them told me.

“You have to actually be good at describing things,” adds Paolo. “Saying I count the days till I can touch you again is more powerful than saying she looks sexy in her lingerie.” Paolo also told me that he sometimes strikes the balance between the two, being raunchy and vulnerable at the same time. That’s how he manages to keep his partner wanting more.

“Sometimes, your imagination can get the best of you. Don’t be an insecure stalker; talk it out with your partner. That’s how we got through it,” he concludes.

Distance Is a Brilliant Editor

“I am in a long-distance relationship because I choose to, I believe the right person will stay with you to figure it out with you, real love isn’t dissolved by boundaries,” Migs says.

Long-term relationships, even geographically distant ones, have always been built on genuine honesty. You find out fast just how much you truly long for the person as you go through your days without them. This may explain why these couples speak of reunions the way the religious speak of pilgrimages.

I came looking for the cracks. By every law of biology, these people should be wilting. I assumed I’d find a few good liars. What I found were people who were happy and, more unsettling, secure.

That makes me wonder about something bigger: are successful relationships truly all about luck? Or intention? For these LDR couples, perhaps distance doesn’t make the heart grow fonder. Perhaps it just makes it honest.
