Bel Belgica Captures the GQ Philippines Launch Like a Portrait From Another Era

Inside photographer Belg Belgica’s painterly, single-sitting portraits for the GQ Dinner Event.

For the GQ Philippines Grand Launch Dinner, Belg Belgica‘s vignette pulled guests into something familiar yet oddly foreign. Photographs that felt like a confession, with each subject taken somewhere distinct from the busy room they had just left. His setup asked people to slow down, look at the lens, and tell a story without saying a word, captured in a single frame.

The setup favored a deep, mottled olive-green, textured like an old wall or dried-up canvas. Belgica’s vision was matte, luscious, vivid in charm and memory. Against it, a series of expressions of how a GQ Man might portray himself took shape: in a navy tuxedo, with a classic bow tie, or a black gown cut through with sharp negative space. The idea carried the quiet authority of a high society portrait.

Belgica is a Manila-based photographer working across fashion, portraiture, and cultural documentation. He is also the co-founder of Espacio Creativo Escolta. Belgica’s space inside the First United Building in Manila’s historic Escolta district has grown into a gathering point for Manila’s emerging creatives. His work carries the district with it, shaped less by trend than by a place that has spent a century deciding what’s worth keeping.

That connection to Escolta’s history became the foundation for his work at the launch dinner. Belgica built his concept around the early studio portraits of Albert Honiss, who photographed Manila society from his own studio in Escolta in the 19th century. He borrowed the bones of that era: textured Schmidli backdrops, minimal set pieces, and the muted tones of a wall that absorbed more light than it reflected, while refusing the era’s rigidity. Where Honiss’s sitters held themselves like statues, Belgica told his guests the opposite: move, loosen up, be exactly who you already are. The resulting portraits feel painterly and transported from another era, yet unmistakably rooted in Manila.
